India Expands Visa-on-Arrival Access for UAE Nationals

India has expanded its Visa-on-Arrival (VoA) access for UAE nationals by adding three more international airports, bringing the total number of eligible entry points to nine. The expansion is expected to strengthen tourism, business travel, and people-to-people movement between the two nations.

What Has Changed?

India has now added the following airports to the VoA list:

  1. Kochi: Cochin International Airport
  2. Calicut: Calicut International Airport
  3. Ahmedabad: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport

Kochi and Calicutare major gateways for Gulf-bound travellers, while Ahmedabad is a strong business hub with high-frequency UAE connections.

These join the earlier six airports already offering VoA to UAE nationals: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. This marks one of the largest expansions of VoA access by India for any country in recent years.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify, a traveller must:

  1. Hold a valid UAE passport. The programme applies ONLY to UAE citizens, not to the millions of expats living in the Emirates.
  2. Have previously obtained an Indian visa (e-Visa or regular sticker visa) at least once
  3. Travel for tourism, business, medical visits or conferences
  4. Carry a return or onward ticket
  5. Have a passport valid for at least 6 months

Important Note

  1. Expatriate residents in the UAE (Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, etc.) are NOT eligible for this VoA. They must continue using the e-Visa or regular visa process based on their passport nationality.
  2. UAE Nationals whose parents or grandparents were born in, or are permanent residents of, Pakistan are not eligible for the VoA scheme.

Visa Validity, Conditions & Fees

The Visa-on-Arrival for UAE nationals includes:

  1. Stay duration: Up to 60 days
  2. Entries allowed: Double entry within the 60-day period
  3. Fee: ₹2,000 per passenger (including children)
  4. Usage: Can be used multiple times a year with no annual limit

Impact on India-UAE Travel

Industry experts expect the expanded VoA to:

  1. Increase last-minute leisure travel from the UAE
  2. Support short business visits to Indian commercial hubs
  3. Boost medical tourism, especially in Kerala and southern India
  4. Enhance overall travel convenience for Emirati nationals
  5. Reduce reliance on the advance visa applications for eligible passengers

The move also aligns with the strengthening Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UAE, which has recently seen expansion in trade, mobility, education, tourism, and digital systems.

Bottom Line

India’s decision to add three more airports to its Visa-on-Arrival scheme represents a major convenience boost for UAE nationals, offering more entry points and smoother travel. However, the facility does not extend to expatriate residents of the UAE, despite unclear headlines.

With the e-Arrival Card now mandatory, travellers should complete it online before departure and keep the necessary documents ready for a smooth entry
