What is an India e-Visa?

The India e-Visa is an electronic travel authorisation that permits eligible travellers to visit India for legitimate purposes. The online visa system allows you to obtain your entry approval before departure.

Who is Eligible for an India e-Visa?

Individuals whose passport issue country is listed among the eligible countries for India e-Visa can initiate the India e-Visa application process. If you do not find your country on the list, check whether you belong to a visa-free, visa on arrival or any other applicable category.

Types of India eVisas with their Validity & Length of Stay

India offers a number of e-Visa types to apply for. Each type you choose should match with the purpose of your visit.

1. Tourist e-Visa: Applies to the applicants planning to explore the country, meet family or friends living in India or enroll in eligible short-term courses. Travellers can choose from the following categories:

2. Business e-Visa: Apply for an Indian Business e-Visa if your purpose of visit includes joining the vessel, setting up Industrial/Business Ventures or attending technical/business meetings.

5. Ayush e-Visa: An e-Visa category that allows treatment under Ayush or Indian systems of medicine. Keep in mind that you cannot apply for this e-Visa without having an authorised invitation letter from a legitimate medical centre or hospital.

6. Ayush Attendant e-Visa: This should only be applied to attendants accompanying a patient taking medical treatment in India. The treatment can include therapeutic care procedures, wellness programs, and yoga practices.

7. Miscellaneous e-Visa: This e-Visa category allows entry into India for travellers having strong family connections in India but do not own an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.

8. Conference e-Visa: For foreign nationals attending conferences, seminars or workshops organised by legitimate institutions in India. No paid or commercial work is allowed under this e-Visa type.

9. Mountaineering e-Visa: International travellers wanting to visit India for mountaineering or trekking on the mountain peaks can choose this visa category. A clearance letter from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) is mandatory.

10. Production Investment e-Visa: It allows eligible travellers to enter India for short-term investment and production related activities, including installation, commissioning, quality check and essential maintenance.

11. Transit e-Visa: This e-Visa type is suitable for travellers transiting through India to a third international destination and cannot be used for any other purposes aside from transit.

12. Film e-Visa: If your purpose of travel involves filming reality TV, web shows/series, feature films or commercial TV serials, this is the e-Visa to be applied for. All the filming activities must get clearance from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (India).

What if I have a genuine emergency and cannot wait for standard processing?

In case of emergencies or last-minute travel plans, you can apply for an India emergency e-Visa which offers expedited e-Visa processing and priority application handling.

Can an India eVisa Be Extended?

Applicants wishing to stay more than the permitted period can apply for the India e-Visa extension by providing the required details, documents or an extension fee (if applicable).

Apply for an extension only if:

Your current visa is valid.
Your e-Visa has at least 15 days remaining before it expires.
You have a genuine and compliant reason for extending your stay in India.
You acknowledge that the India e-Visa extension is not guaranteed and is subject to immigration authorities approval.

Steps to apply for an online India eVisa

Step 1

Begin completing your initial e-Visa application page by providing the following details:

Contact & General Details : Email ID, phone number, and nationality
Travel Details: e-Visa type according to the purpose of your visit and date and port of arrival
Processing Speed: Choose one of the 2 preferred processing speeds:
Normal Processing (3 to 6 days): Follows a standard timeline

Urgent Processing (1 to 3 days): Fastest e-Visa approval option
Security Verification: Enter the given captcha code

Click on “continue” and you’ll be redirected to the next page to complete your application.

Step 2

Once you get redirected to the next page, a temporary app application ID will come up. Save this important information, as using this, you will be able to complete your application form later by selecting the “Complete Partially Filled Application”. Now begin filling your details including your general, passport, and educational details. Once done, click on “Save and Continue”.

Step 3

Enter accurate details such as the applicant’s full address, marital status, and occupation details. Also, select “yes” or “no” to the given question as applicable. After completing, click save and continue for the next step:

Step 4

In this step you need to fill in your father and mother details. Click save and continue and go to the next page.

Step 5

You have to fill a place to be visited, meaning the place in India where you are interested in & select theexpected port of exit. If you have ever been to India before, select “yes”. Then you have to fill in some details to support your answer to your last visit in India.

In reference, put your contact person in India, including his or her name, address, state, and district. Also a reference in your country, can be your friend, family person or anyone.

Step 6

At this stage, carefully review each entered information to make sure every detail is correct as any changes cannot be done once you proceed to the next page. Once everything seems accurate, only then click on “submit”. If a change is needed, click on “edit” and make the required changes.

Step 7

At this stage applicants are required to upload the mandatory documents, along with any additional documents applicable for their selected e-Visa type.

Step 8
