The Indian passport just got a little stronger. According to the latest Henley Passport Index, released on Tuesday, India now ranks 77th in the world, up from 80th last year.
This rise means Indian passport holders are on par with travellers from Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal, who can also visit 59countries without a visa.
The index covered 199 passports and 227 travel destinations
Even with this jump in the rankings, the number of visa-free countries for Indians dipped from 62 in 2024 to 59 this year. The reason? It’s not just about how many places you can go—it’s also about how other countries’ passports compare each year. So, India moves up as others shuffle around.
Singapore is now the clear leader, with its passport unlocking visa-free entry to 194 countries—the highest on record this year. Japan and South Korea are tied for 2nd position, opening doors to 190 destinations. The 3rd position is held jointly by Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, and Spain.
Think of the Henley Passport Index as the travel world’s report card. It measures how many places a passport can get you without needing a visa first. The numbers come from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and are double-checked by Henley & Partners' own research team.
