India has expanded its electronic visa (e-Visa) framework by enabling online applications for Transit, Mountaineering, Film, Production/Investment, and Entry travel. The expansion was announced on 21 November 2025, and these e-Visa categories are currently being issued, allowing eligible foreign nationals to apply without visiting Indian diplomatic missions. These additions are available through the India e-VisaSystem, which supports fully digital application and approval workflows.
Only nationals of Countries Eligible for the India e-Visa under the eligibility framework may apply for these categories. Availability may vary by nationality and passport type.
Applicants must submit their India e-Visa Application online and obtain any mandatory prior clearances before filing. An approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is required prior to travel. Biometric enrolment is completed upon arrival in India, after which the e-Visa is stamped in the passport.
Applications under these categories are expected to be processed within 1-3 days.
The expansion reflects India’s ongoing efforts to modernise immigration procedures through digital platforms, with further system enhancements expected as electronic processing continues to evolve.
What happens if my travel purpose changes after approval?
Applicants must strictly adhere to the approved visa purpose. Any deviation may result in refusal of entry or future visa restrictions.
Are minors eligible for the India e-Visa?
Yes. Minors must apply separately and require their own passport and supporting documents. A parent or guardian may complete the application on their behalf.
Do all new e-Visa categories require prior government clearance?
No. Prior clearance is required only for specific categories, such as mountaineering, film, and production/investment travel, before submitting the online application.
